2010-02-04: Bike to Work strongly welcomes the introduction of the 30 kmh zone in Dublin City Centre.

Bike to Work Director James Leahy states: ‘When we speak to employees who are thinking of switching to cycling safety is often the biggest concern. They don’t realise that as the city has got more congested in the last decade the accident rate has dramatically reduced. We must make cycling attractive as well as safe to counter this perception. It is measures such as the successful Heavy Goods Vehicle Management Plan and 30 kph zone that are doing this.’

Dublin City Council’s Pedal Cycle - Traffic Volumes and Collision Data Report from April 2009 shows that in the decade from 1998 to 2008 the number of cyclists entering the City Centre went up by 34% while the number of injuries per cyclists dropped by 70%.

James Leahy concludes: ‘It is sad that much of the debate about the 30 kmh zone has scapegoated cyclists for what will be only a couple of seconds delay to a small portion of the drivers who use these streets. The reality is that every time this policy encourages someone to switch to cycling this frees up a space for the vehicles which need to access the centre, for example for deliveries and the mobility impaired.’
